TMJ Pain After Pregnancy
I am writing this article because twice in the same day, I’ve had two women come to see me with jaw (TMJ) pain after giving birth.
In doing some research on TMJ, I have found this is quite common. The reasons are not fully understood, however theories are that hormonal changes affect the alignment of the jaw. I have also seen increased teeth grinding due to poor sleep (no surprise!). An article by the American Dental Association summarizes that postural changes occur after pregnancy due to breast feeding and carrying a baby. This changes the angle of the head and jaw causing pain.
As a Chiropractor I know this to be true, spinal changes affect how the head and jaw are carried.
So what to do? We have great success treating TMJ problems by working the muscles around the jaw with specialized Graston tools (www.grastontechnique.com) and we improve posture with chiropractic adjustments using the proven Pettibon Correction Program. TMJ pain can drastically affect your quality of life!
